Spurs Eye Markkanen Trade Amid Draft Asset Accumulation

San Antonio Spurs are reportedly interested in acquiring Lauri Markkanen as they continue to bolster their future draft capital. Despite trading away a 2024 first-round pick, the Spurs still possess a substantial collection of draft assets for potential trades.

San Antonio Spurs are not actively pursuing a Lauri Markkanen trade, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. The Spurs have acquired a large number of draft assets over the past few seasons, including the rights to the eighth pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, which they recently swapped to the New Orleans Pelicans for an unprotected first-rounder in 2031.

Markkanen has been the subject of trade rumors for weeks, with the Utah Jazz and Indiana Pacers among the teams reportedly interested in acquiring the Finnish forward. He is averaging 24.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game this season while shooting 45.6% from the field and 40.9% from beyond the arc.

The Spurs are in a unique position to make a trade for Markkanen due to the number of draft assets at their disposal. They could package multiple first-round picks and a young player to get a deal done. However, it is unclear how much interest the Spurs have in Markkanen, who is under contract for the next three seasons at a salary of $16.5 million per year.

The Spurs have been accumulating draft assets for several years now, with the goal of adding young, talented players to their roster. They have traded away several veteran players in recent years, including DeMar DeRozan, Lonnie Walker IV, and Trey Lyles, in order to clear cap space and acquire draft picks.

The Spurs currently hold the rights to their own first-round pick in 2023, as well as the Pelicans' unprotected first-round pick in 2031. They also have two second-round picks in 2023 and one second-round pick in 2024.

The Spurs are likely to be patient with their rebuilding process, and they may not be willing to part with any of their draft assets unless they are presented with a can't-miss opportunity. Markkanen is a talented player, but the Spurs may not be ready to make a move for him just yet.
