Risch Condemns ICC Applications for Arrest Warrants for Israeli Officials

U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today released the following statement on the International Criminal Court's (ICC) consideration of applications for arrest warrants against Israeli officials for alleged war crimes committed in the occupied Palestinian territories:

"The United States strongly condemns the International Criminal Court's (ICC) decision to consider applications for arrest warrants against Israeli officials for alleged war crimes committed in the occupied Palestinian territories. This politically motivated move by the ICC is a dangerous and counterproductive step that will undermine efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

The ICC has no jurisdiction over Israelis or Palestinians, and its attempt to assert jurisdiction in this case is a clear violation of international law. The Rome Statute, which established the ICC, explicitly excludes from its jurisdiction crimes committed by nationals of states that have not ratified the treaty. Neither Israel nor the United States is a party to the Rome Statute, and therefore the ICC has no legal basis to investigate or prosecute alleged crimes committed by Israeli officials.

The ICC's decision to consider these applications is particularly troubling given the highly politicized nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The ICC has repeatedly demonstrated its bias against Israel, and it is clear that this latest move is part of a broader effort to delegitimize the Jewish state.

The United States has consistently opposed the ICC's attempts to assert jurisdiction over our allies, and we will continue to do so. We call on the ICC to withdraw these applications and to respect the principle of state sovereignty.

The ICC's actions are not only harmful to Israel, but they also undermine the credibility of the court itself. The ICC is a supposedly impartial institution that is supposed to dispense justice fairly and impartially. However, its recent actions have shown that it is nothing more than a political tool that is used to target Israel and other U.S. allies.

The United States will continue to stand with Israel and will continue to oppose the ICC's efforts to undermine the Jewish state. We call on all parties to reject the ICC's political motivations and to work towards a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians."
