Former Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby Sentenced to Home Confinement, Faces Additional Penalties

Former Baltimore City State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby has been sentenced to 1 year of home confinement, 2 years of probation, and ordered to pay $42,890 in restitution and forfeit $95,000 in ill-gotten gains related to perjury and mortgage fraud charges.

Judge Lydia Kay Griggsby handed down the sentence on Thursday, February 16, 2023, in a federal courtroom in Baltimore. Mosby was found guilty of perjury and mortgage fraud in September 2022 following a two-week trial.

The charges against Mosby stemmed from a series of false statements she made on loan applications in order to purchase two homes in Florida. Mosby falsely claimed she earned more than $400,000 a year when she actually earned significantly less, and she failed to disclose that she had withdrawn $90,000 from her city retirement account without paying taxes.

In addition to the home confinement, probation, and financial penalties, Judge Griggsby also barred Mosby from running for public office for 5 years. Mosby has already resigned from her position as State's Attorney for Baltimore City.

Mosby's attorney, A. Scott Bolden, argued for a lesser sentence, citing Mosby's "long-standing record of public service" and the fact that she has no prior criminal history. However, Judge Griggsby rejected this request, stating that Mosby's "willful and intentional" actions warranted a serious consequence.

The sentencing brings to a close a tumultuous chapter in Mosby's political career. Mosby was a rising star in the Democratic Party and was seen as a potential future governor or senator. However, her legal troubles have derailed her political aspirations.

Mosby is expected to appeal her conviction and sentence. In a statement released after the sentencing, Mosby maintained her innocence and vowed to "continue to fight for what I believe in."

The case has also raised questions about the integrity of the Baltimore City State's Attorney's Office. Mosby has been accused of using her position to benefit herself and her family, and some have called for an independent investigation into the office's practices.

The sentencing of Mosby is a reminder that no one is above the law, not even elected officials. It is also a warning to all public servants that they must conduct themselves with the highest ethical standards.
